MtDNA is a special type of DNA
Many people do not realise but mammals have 2 genomes. One is the nuclear DNA genome and the other is the mitochondrial DNA genome. MtDNA is:
- Found in the mitochondria of the cell and not the cell nucleus.
- Handed down from mother to her children; both male and female.
- Males have MtDNA in their cells inherited from their mother but do not pass it to their children, only females do so.
- MtDNA is rarely subject to mutation and is not affected by heat or other environmental changes.
Due to New York State Department of Health regulations, we cannot offer any peace of mind paternity or relationship tests to New York residents. However, we can offer legal paternity and relationship tests in New York. Contact us or click here for more information.
Analysing MtDNA
Our analysts will extract the MtDNA from each sample provided and specifically map out your X-SV profiles to determine whether the sequence of these profiles is similar enough to conclude a positive result. Should they be similar enough, then the tested individual share the same maternal line. The test will not, however, tell you how close or how distant the relationship is, neither the exact nature of the relationship (aunt, grandparent etc).
homeDNAdirect USA offers the MtDNA test for 2 participants from only $399.00 and you can expect to receive your results within 20-30 business days.
Need to confirm maternity?
MtDNA testing is extremely accurate but will not tell you whether you and another individual share the same mother. The fact that all individuals from the same maternal line will share the same MtDNA profile means the scientists are unable to distinguish the type of relationship between the individuals tested – they can only confirm that the individuals tested have a common, biological maternal ancestor. If you wish to confirm with total accuracy that you and another individual have the same mother you will need to carry out a maternity DNA test and compare the DNA of the alleged mother and the child. Results for maternity testing are 99.99% accurate.
